How to use the result when choosing a race
The finish estimate is arithmetic, not a prediction of your fitness. A pace from a short run may not hold over a longer distance, and hills, congestion, weather and aid-station visits can change the elapsed time. Compare a few plausible paces instead of relying on a single best-case result.
If the result is close to the cutoff, read the event rules before paying. A finish-line limit can coexist with earlier intermediate checkpoints, a fixed road-reopening time, or a separate limit for a particular distance. Passing this calculator's comparison does not establish that you will pass those checkpoints.
Check when the clock starts. A limit measured from the starting gun can include the time spent waiting to cross the start line. A limit measured from your individual chip start may work differently. If the rules are unclear, ask the organizer which clock applies and whether walkers or run/walk participants are supported.
A worked half-marathon example
At 12:00 per mile, a half marathon takes about 2 hours 37 minutes 19 seconds of moving time. Adding 5 minutes for stops gives about 2 hours 42 minutes 19 seconds elapsed. Against a 3-hour cutoff, the remaining time is about 17 minutes 41 seconds.
Now change the pace to 13:30 per mile with the same 5 minutes of stops. The elapsed estimate becomes about 3 hours 1 minute 59 seconds, which exceeds that limit. The difference shows why the pace and stop allowance need to reflect the whole event, not only the first few miles.
The calculation
Moving time = distance in your chosen unit × pace in seconds. Elapsed time = moving time + stopped time. Time remaining = cutoff time − elapsed time. The average pace available after your stop allowance is (cutoff time − stopped time) ÷ distance.
The calculator uses 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km and 42.195 km, with 1 mile equal to 1.609344 km. Results are rounded to the nearest second. The calculated pace at the limit leaves no allowance beyond the stops you enter. GPS watches may record a different distance because of reception, turns, weaving or the line you run.

- Which event? Different distances at the same race may have separate start times and limits.
- Which clock? Confirm gun time, chip time, wave time, or a fixed closure time.
- Which checkpoints? Look for intermediate limits and what happens if you miss one.
- What support remains? Confirm when aid stations, timing and course support close.
